Malacoplakia of the tongue

We report a rare case of malacoplakia of the base of the tongue presenting with a neck ulcer in a 98 year old woman.
A 98 year old woman presented to the ear, nose, and throat department with a two month history of left neck mass. The examination revealed a shallow ulcer with surrounding induration and tenderness. The mass was fixed to the deeper structures and a malignancy was suspected. A fine needle aspirate through the edge of the ulcer was performed and a subsequent pharyngoscopy revealed a small mass in the base of the tongue.
