The introduction of endoscopy of the upper digestive tract as a routine diagnostic procedure has increased the number of duodenal biopsies. Consequently the pathologist is frequently asked to evaluate duodenal biopsies. In this review a practical approach to the evaluation of the duodenal biopsy is discussed. An overview of the handling of specimens, the normal histology and commonly encountered diseases entities is discussed. Finally, an algorithmic approach is provided together with commonly seen infections.
